MULGUMPIN

MULGUMPIN/MORETON ISLAND

Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) is jointly managed by QPWS and the traditional owners, the Quandamooka People whose relationship with the island dates back thousands of years. The island features crystal clear lagoons, rocky headlands, tall sand dunes and miles of sandy beaches.

Mulgumpin’s national park was renamed in 2021 to Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) meaning ‘lightnings’ playground’  in the language of the Quandamooka people.

‘Gheebulum’ and ‘Kunungai’ are the two largest sand hills in the national park which tell the creation of life story, the Legend of the Lightnings Playground.

Indigenous cultural heritage includes shell middens that are evidence of thousands of years of Aboriginal occupation. Ruins of coastal defence bases from World War II are a reminder of Australia’s involvement in world conflict. There also remains a historic lighthouse.

Just a short cruise away lies Moreton Island — a paradise of crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches, and incredible marine life. Whether you’re planning a family day trip, a romantic getaway, or an adventure with friends, Moreton Island has something for everyone. Here are the top 10 things to do on Moreton Island that will make your trip unforgettable. 1. Snorkel the Tangalooma Wrecks One of the most famous attractions on Moreton Island, the Tangalooma Wrecks are a cluster of 15 sunken ships that have become a thriving marine sanctuary. Snorkelers can swim alongside tropical fish, spot turtles, and explore coral formations. It’s a must-do adventure and included in every Dolphin Wild Island Cruise. 2. Spot Wild Dolphins in Moreton Bay Dolphins are Moreton Island’s most playful locals! On our cruises, it’s common to see pods swimming right alongside the boat. Few experiences compare to watching these beautiful animals in their natural habitat — no enclosures, no tricks, just dolphins in the wild. 3. Relax on Pristine Beaches With over 90% of the island protected as national park, Moreton Island’s beaches remain unspoiled and uncrowded. Pack a towel, feel the soft white sand beneath your feet, and enjoy one of the most peaceful beach days you’ll ever have. 4. See Dugongs and Turtles Did you know Moreton Bay is home to one of the largest populations of dugongs in the world? These gentle “sea cows” are often spotted grazing on seagrass. You’ll also see turtles surfacing for air as you cruise — a magical encounter for kids and adults alike. 5. Explore Blue Lagoon A natural freshwater lake surrounded by white sand and eucalyptus trees, Blue Lagoon is a refreshing stop for a swim. Its crystal-clear water makes it a favourite for nature lovers and photographers. 6. Go Sandboarding on the Dunes For thrill-seekers, the giant sand dunes of Moreton Island are the ultimate playground. Grab a sandboard, climb to the top, and glide down at full speed — fun for the whole family and a true Queensland bucket-list experience. 7. Discover Cape Moreton Lighthouse Standing tall since 1857, Cape Moreton Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Queensland. From here, you’ll get sweeping views of the island and, during winter, it’s one of the best places to spot migrating whales. 8. Swim in the Champagne Pools These natural rock pools on the island’s northern tip are filled by waves that fizz and bubble like champagne. It’s the perfect place to cool off while soaking up the beauty of the rugged coastline. 9. Join an Eco-Tour Moreton Island is part of a fragile marine ecosystem, and eco-tours like those run by Dolphin Wild Island Cruises are designed to protect and celebrate its biodiversity. The Ultimate Guide to Snorkeling the Tangalooma Wrecks

Snorkelling at Moreton Island Wrecks
The Ultimate Guide to Snorkeling the Tangalooma Wrecks If you’re planning a trip to Moreton Island, one adventure you simply can’t miss is snorkeling the Tangalooma Wrecks. This iconic site is one of Queensland’s top underwater experiences — and it’s just a short cruise from Brisbane. Whether you’re a first-time snorkeler or an experienced explorer, this guide will cover everything you need to know about visiting the wrecks, what to expect, and how to make the most of your day. What Are the Tangalooma Wrecks? The Tangalooma Wrecks are a cluster of 15 ships deliberately sunk between 1963 and 1984 to create a safe harbor for boats. Over time, these wrecks have transformed into a vibrant artificial reef that’s now home to hundreds of marine species. It’s a snorkeler’s paradise — and one of the top reasons Moreton Island is considered one of the best day trips from Brisbane. 👉 Want more ideas for your trip? Check out our blog on the Top 10 Things to Do on Moreton Island. Marine Life You’ll See at the Wrecks When you slip into the turquoise waters, you’re stepping into an underwater world filled with life. Some common sightings include: Tropical Fish – Schools of colorful parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Turtles – Green and loggerhead turtles are regular visitors. Dolphins – Playful bottlenose dolphins sometimes swim by the wrecks. Corals – Hard and soft corals thriving on the sunken hulls. Occasional Surprises – Rays, wobbegong sharks, and even dugongs have been spotted nearby. Best Time to Snorkel the Tangalooma Wrecks The wrecks are beautiful year-round, but here are some tips: Summer (Dec–Feb): Warm water and excellent visibility. Winter (Jun–Aug): Cooler temps but often crystal-clear water and the chance to spot migrating whales. Morning vs Afternoon: Mornings typically offer calmer seas and better visibility. Safety & Snorkeling Tips Always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid if you’re not a confident swimmer. Go with an experienced guide who knows the currents and safe entry points. Use reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the marine ecosystem. Keep a safe distance from wildlife — look, don’t touch. That’s why joining an eco-certified tour like Dolphin Wild Island Cruises is the safest and easiest way to experience the wrecks. Why Choose Dolphin Wild Island Cruises for Your Snorkel Adventure? Not all tours are the same — here’s what makes us stand out: All Gear Included → Masks, snorkels, fins, and flotation devices provided. Guided Snorkeling → Our crew helps you spot marine life and keeps you safe. Eco-Certified → We’re committed to protecting Moreton Bay’s fragile ecosystem.
